A corporate symbol, logo or logotype should be like a signature—individual and original. It’s a distinct visual mark that separates you from all others. At the same time, a good mark/logo distinguishes your uniqueness and defines the quality of you and/or your business. It should be memorable and easily reproduced in print or electronic media. And it should have a long-shelf life making it cost-effective. It certainly should avoid being so trendy it appears to be a slave to this year’s fashion and will need redesigned next season.
In the hands of a good designer a logo and/or logotype will create an image that will clearly portray your specific business and what you want it to be—its style, quality and benefits. It should be so unmistakable it breaths life into you company. A successful logo/logotype should be something clients and perspective customers can immediately recognize intellectual, emotionally and aesthetically. It’s designer should understand: why the public and your audience responds to one image over another; how an image can influence customer and employee loyalty; and, why one mark is more easily remembered over another. And a savvy designer always takes into account all the logo’s current usages and future applications so it never straight jackets the company or limits its reproduction.
Last, even well designed logo/logotypes need update from time to time to remain fresh and current (consider the new UPS logo).
Good design and a good logo/logotype is the banner for your company that simply makes good sense and supports creating a better business and a better bottom line.
